CAMEL: a multi-agent framework built for research
CAMEL is an open-source Python framework, run by the CAMEL-AI community, that gets several AI agents to talk and work together. It is mostly used for research, data generation and simulation rather than for shipping a product quickly.

An idea that came out of a research paper
CAMEL popularized a simple idea: instead of one model doing everything, two AI agents take on roles and talk to each other to solve a task. The project has grown since then and now describes itself as an open community searching for the “scaling laws of agents”. The framework provides conversational agents (ChatAgent), a role-playing mode (RolePlaying), a “Workforce” to organize teams of agents into hierarchies, plus memory, tools, document retrieval and connectors to many model providers.
What people build with it
The docs highlight three uses. The first is generating synthetic data: producing dialogues or step-by-step reasoning that can later be used to fine-tune a model. The second is task automation, with recipes for web research, document analysis or a panel of agents judging hackathon projects. The third is simulation: the related OASIS project aims to simulate very large numbers of agents to observe collective behavior. In other words, multi-agent systems are the heart of the project, not an add-on.
CAMEL also plugs into the Model Context Protocol in both directions: using external tools, or exposing its own agents to other applications.
Getting started
Install the package with pip install camel-ai; it needs a recent Python (3.10 or later). The quick-start guide builds a ChatAgent wired to a web search tool once you have set an API key from a model provider. The repository ships many “cookbooks”, topic-by-topic tutorials, which are the natural next step toward role-playing or the Workforce.
Strengths, limits and alternatives
Strengths. Apache 2.0 license, strong academic roots, a wide range of agents, tools and models, and plenty of material on data generation and simulation.
Limits. The research focus shows: lots of modules, a large API surface, and fewer production building blocks (hosting, dashboard, user management) than product-oriented frameworks. It has not reached version 1.0 yet, so expect API changes.
Alternatives. AutoGen shares the same agents-in-conversation culture, MetaGPT organizes agents like a software team, and CrewAI offers a role-based approach geared toward business use cases.

Frequently asked questions
Where does CAMEL come from?
CAMEL started with a research paper posted on arXiv in March 2023 and presented at NeurIPS 2023. The original idea was role-playing: one agent gives instructions, another carries them out, so a task gets done with little human input.
Is CAMEL free?
Yes. The framework is Apache 2.0 licensed and installs for free with pip. There is no paid cloud offering for the framework itself; you only pay for the models you call, unless you run local models.
How is CAMEL related to Eigent?
Eigent is a workspace for collaborating with agents, published by EIGENT UK LTD and built on the CAMEL framework. It is a separate product, with its own self-hostable open-source version and its own paid plans.
Does CAMEL support MCP?
Yes. According to the docs, a CAMEL agent can connect to MCP servers as a client, and a CAMEL agent or toolkit can also be exposed as an MCP server.
