What you can build

Copilot Studio brings several kinds of builds into one web interface. The core is AI agents: assistants that answer questions, draw on your documents and trigger actions in your tools. Alongside them you will find drag-and-drop workflows, “agent flows” similar to Power Automate, and apps (in preview as of October 22, 2026). You can describe an agent in plain language to get a first draft, then refine it.

Agents publish to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, a website or a mobile app. They can call Power Platform connectors, APIs or Model Context Protocol servers. Microsoft also documents orchestration across agents, so you can build a multi-agent system in which a main agent hands tasks to sub-agents.

Low-code, with Power Fx when you need more

Most of the work needs no code. For finer rules, Copilot Studio uses Power Fx, which Microsoft describes as a low-code language based on Excel-like formulas. In practice, the typical builder is a “citizen developer” or a Power Platform team, often backed by IT for access rights, security and connectors.

Cost and Microsoft lock-in

As of October 22, 2026, the pricing page offers a pack of 25,000 Copilot Credits for $200 per month, pay-as-you-go through Azure, or a one-year prepaid plan. Copilot Credits replaced “messages” on September 1, 2025 and do not roll over month to month. The trial license lets you build, not publish. Your budget therefore depends mostly on conversation volume and the actions your agents trigger: it pays to pilot one use case before scaling up.

Lock-in is significant: Copilot Studio relies on Power Platform, Microsoft Entra for identity and Azure for pay-as-you-go billing. Model choice is more open than it used to be, with both OpenAI and Anthropic models offered, but the tool itself runs only in Microsoft’s cloud.

Strengths, limits and alternatives

Strengths: native integration with Teams and Microsoft 365, centralized governance and security, and building that is accessible to business users. Limits: credit-based billing you need to watch, heavy dependence on the Microsoft ecosystem, and little appeal for organizations that do not use those tools.

If your developers prefer code, Microsoft offers Microsoft Agent Framework. On another cloud, Google’s counterpart is Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Official pricing: Copilot Studio pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Copilot Studio cost?

As of October 22, 2026, Microsoft sells a pack of 25,000 Copilot Credits for $200 per month. You can also pay as you go through an Azure subscription, or buy a one-year prepaid plan. Unused credits do not roll over to the next month.

What are Copilot Credits?

They are Copilot Studio's billing unit: each agent action consumes credits. They replaced the older “messages” on September 1, 2025. How many credits you use depends on what your agent does.

Can I try Copilot Studio for free?

A trial license lets you build and test agents. It does not let you publish them to your users; for that you need a paid plan.

Does Copilot Studio only use OpenAI models?

No. Microsoft offers OpenAI models and has added Anthropic's Claude models to Copilot Studio. What is available depends on your organization's settings.
