Generative AI: the AI that creates content

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content, whether text, images, audio, video or code, from a simple request. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and image generators are the best-known examples.

What “generative” means

Generative AI does not look up an answer in a database: it builds a result, piece by piece. For text, a large language model predicts the most likely next chunk of a word, then the next, and so on. For images, other techniques such as diffusion models start from random noise and refine it step by step until the requested picture emerges.

Most people discovered it when ChatGPT launched in November 2022. Since then, these tools have been built into email clients, office suites and smartphones.

Very concrete examples

  • At work: turn meeting notes into a summary, suggest three versions of a tricky email, translate a product sheet, write a spreadsheet formula.
  • At home: plan the week’s dinners around what is left in the fridge, draft a letter to cancel a subscription, make up a bedtime story starring your kids.
  • For creative projects: illustrate a flyer for a local club, generate background music, produce a synthetic voice-over for a video.

Why it matters to you

Generative AI saves time on first drafts. But it produces what is plausible, not what is verified. It can invent a source or a figure: this is called a hallucination. A good rule of thumb is to let it handle the form (structure, tone, rewording) while you stay in charge of the substance (facts, numbers, decisions).

Results depend heavily on how you ask. The prompt generator helps you write a clear request: context, goal and the format you expect.

Myths and risks

  • “It’s free, so there’s no catch.” Depending on the tool’s settings, your conversations may be used to improve future models. Avoid pasting personal or confidential data without checking those settings first.
  • “A realistic image must be real.” Generative AI can also produce deepfakes: fake photos, voices or videos, increasingly used in scams.
  • “It does the thinking for you.” It speeds up execution; judgment, fact-checking and responsibility remain yours.

Frequently asked questions

How is generative AI different from traditional AI?

Traditional AI sorts, classifies or predicts: it flags spam or estimates a delivery time. Generative AI produces something that did not exist before, such as a paragraph, an illustration or a tune. Both learn from data.

Is AI-generated content original?

It is new in the sense that it is usually not copied word for word, but it is built from what the model learned from its training data. Copyright questions are still being debated, so for professional or commercial use, check the terms of the tool you rely on.

Can you tell when content was made by AI?

Not always by eye. Some providers add invisible watermarks, and the EU AI Act includes transparency obligations for certain generated content. Automated AI detectors, on the other hand, regularly get it wrong.
