OpenAI Agent Builder: a tool being retired, and how to move on
Agent Builder is OpenAI's visual canvas for assembling agent workflows, launched as part of AgentKit. OpenAI has deprecated it and it will shut down on November 30, 2026, so it should not be adopted for new projects.

What Agent Builder did
Agent Builder is a visual editor built into OpenAI’s developer platform for designing multi-step agentic workflows. You started from a template or a blank canvas, then wired nodes together by drag and drop: agents, conditions, file search, guardrails to screen inputs and outputs, connections to MCP servers, or a human approval step. The editor included a preview for testing, debugging tools, trace graders and a system of published versions.
Once ready, a workflow could be embedded in a website or app through ChatKit, or exported as code for the Agents SDK. Agent Builder was part of AgentKit, the toolset OpenAI introduced in October 2025.
A deprecation to take seriously
As of October 22, 2026, OpenAI’s deprecations page says the announcement was made on June 3, 2026 and that shutdown is set for November 30, 2026. The rest of the toolset is not affected in the same way: ChatKit remains available. If you have workflows in production, the deadline is close. Two migration paths are documented:
- Export to code with the OpenAI Agents SDK, in Python or TypeScript. This is the most faithful route for technical workflows, but it requires a team that can maintain code.
- Rebuild the agent in ChatGPT as a ChatGPT Workspace agent, available on the Business, Enterprise and Edu plans of ChatGPT. OpenAI warns that highly deterministic workflows, which must always follow the same path, fit less well there.
Cost and lock-in
The tool had no price of its own: your bill covered the tokens consumed by models and the tools called (web search, file search, storage) at API rates. Lock-in was high: models, hosting and workflow format all belonged to OpenAI. The announced shutdown shows the risk clearly: a hosted tool can disappear, and it is up to the user to organize the exit.
What to replace it with
It depends on your profile. If you want to stay with OpenAI and work in code, the Agents SDK is the natural next step. If you are looking for a comparable visual editor that is model-agnostic and self-hostable, n8n is a solid option. The official migration guide walks through the steps: OpenAI documentation.

Frequently asked questions
When does Agent Builder shut down?
OpenAI announced the deprecation of Agent Builder on June 3, 2026, with shutdown scheduled for November 30, 2026. ChatKit, the chat interface component, remains available.
How do I migrate an Agent Builder workflow?
OpenAI offers two routes: export the workflow as Agents SDK code in Python or TypeScript, or rebuild it as agents in ChatGPT Workspace (Business, Enterprise and Edu plans). The documentation warns that highly deterministic workflows translate less well into ChatGPT agents.
Did Agent Builder cost extra?
There was no separate subscription for the tool. You pay for model tokens and the tools you use at OpenAI API rates, for example web search or file search.
Can I use non-OpenAI models with Agent Builder?
Agent Builder is designed around OpenAI's models and platform. If you want the freedom to switch model providers, migrate to a model-agnostic tool.
