AI subscriptions compared: which one is really worth the money?

By The Info Agent IA editorial team ·

Several translucent cards of different sizes laid out on a desk, an image that suggests comparing AI subscriptions.

An AI subscription usually costs around 20 dollars per month, but plans range from 4.99 euros to more than 200 dollars depending on the assistant and how much you use it. This comparison brings together prices found on official pages on October 22, 2026, explains what you are really paying for and helps you decide whether a subscription is worth it for you.

Three price ranges, three profiles

Looking at the table, the plans fall into three groups.

Entry level: under 10 per month

Google AI Plus (4.99 euros), Le Chat Student (5.99 dollars), ChatGPT Go and Grok Plus (8 dollars), and Perplexity Education Pro (10 dollars for verified students and teachers) target people who keep hitting free-plan limits but do not need the most powerful models. These plans mainly raise quotas. Note that OpenAI has announced it is testing ads on ChatGPT Free and Go, but not on Plus.

Standard: around 20 per month

This is the core of the market: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro at 20 dollars, Google AI Pro at 21.99 euros, Microsoft 365 Premium at 19.99 dollars. Le Chat Pro stands out at 14.99 dollars before tax. At this price you generally get the provider’s flagship models, much higher limits and advanced features such as projects, deep research and coding tools. This is the right level for daily professional use.

High end: 100 dollars and up

ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max start at 100 dollars, Google AI Ultra at 99.99 euros (up to 219.99 euros for the top tier), and Perplexity Max and Grok Ultra reach 200 dollars. These plans are for people who use AI all day, especially for coding with agents or running long tasks. For everyday use, the gain is nowhere near proportional to the price.

What you are really paying for

An AI subscription is not simply “a smarter AI”. The differences from the free plan, covered in our explainer on free vs paid AI, come down to four things.

  1. Usage volume. This is often the real reason to pay: more messages, files, images and deep research. Claude Max and Google AI Ultra are even defined as a multiple of the lower plan’s limits.
  2. Access to the best models. Free Gemini uses Flash-Lite, AI Plus moves up to Flash and AI Pro unlocks Gemini 4 Argon. OpenAI follows the same logic, keeping its flagship models for Plus and Pro.
  3. Exclusive features. Claude Code and Claude’s Chrome extension, ChatGPT’s projects and custom GPTs, the Grok Bot agent in beta: some features simply do not exist on free plans.
  4. Bundled services. Several subscriptions include more than AI: cloud storage from Google (400 GB to 5 TB), Office and OneDrive from Microsoft, API credits from Mistral, an X subscription for Grok. Duck.ai can only be bought with the DuckDuckGo subscription, which includes a VPN.

That last point makes comparisons harder: a Microsoft 365 or Google AI Pro plan can be good value if you already use the storage or the office suite, and pointless if you do not.

Paying yearly: some listed discounts

Some providers offer an annual price that is cheaper than twelve monthly payments. According to their official pages on October 22, 2026:

  • Claude Pro works out at 17 dollars per month on an annual plan, or 200 dollars paid upfront, before tax;
  • Perplexity Pro costs 200 dollars per year and Perplexity Max 2,000 dollars per year;
  • Microsoft 365 Personal is 99.99 dollars per year, Family 129.99 and Premium 199.99;
  • ChatGPT Business drops from 25 to 20 dollars per user per month with annual billing.

An annual commitment only makes sense if you are sure of your choice: try one month first, because the assistant that suits you best can change within a few months.

Check yourself You use ChatGPT for free and hit the limit twice a week, mostly when uploading files. Should you get Pro?

No. Pro, from 100 dollars per month, is designed for heavy daily use. In your case, Go at 8 dollars or Plus at 20 dollars is more than enough: Go already raises the limits, and Plus adds the flagship models if answer quality matters. You could also split your use between two free plans.

When a subscription is really worth it

Paying makes sense in four specific situations:

  • you hit the limits every day, and waiting costs you working time;
  • you need a more capable model for complex reasoning, code or long documents, and the free plan lets you down on those tasks;
  • you are missing a specific feature: Claude Code, more deep research, agent mode, shared projects;
  • you already use the bundled services: Google storage or the Microsoft 365 suite.

On the other hand, if you ask a few questions a day, a well-chosen free plan is enough. Our guide to the best free AI helps you get the most out of one before paying.

If you are a developer who wants to build a model into an app, a consumer subscription is the wrong tool: the API is billed by usage, at a price per million tokens. Our AI agent cost calculator gives you a rough estimate based on your volume.

Traps to avoid before you subscribe

The listed price is not always the price you pay. Claude, Le Chat and Grok show prices before tax, while ChatGPT and Microsoft show US prices. The final amount depends on your country and local sales tax or VAT, so check it in your account before confirming.

Paying does not automatically protect your data. Training on your conversations stays on by default on Le Chat Pro and Student, and Perplexity’s “AI data retention” setting is also on by default for Pro and Max. With Claude, training can be switched off on Free, Pro and Max. It is mainly team plans, such as Claude Team and ChatGPT Business, that exclude training by default. Adjust your privacy settings whether you pay or not.

Plans change. Microsoft replaced Copilot Pro with Microsoft 365 Premium, and Grok has been part of the X subscription since October 12, 2026 (existing SuperGrok subscribers can keep their plan). Reread the terms when your subscription renews.
