ChatGPT vs Claude: which one should you choose?
Pick ChatGPT if you want an all-rounder that talks, makes images and has an $8-a-month entry plan; pick Claude if most of your work is long text, documents or code. As of October 22, 2026, both cost $20 a month for their main plan, and Claude’s models hold the top two spots in the Epoch AI-based ranking on our site, just ahead of OpenAI’s flagship.
The short answer
ChatGPT and Claude are both general-purpose AI assistants: you type in plain English and they answer, draft, summarize and analyze. They have far more in common than not. The differences come down to a handful of features and a different focus.
| If you mainly want to… | Go with |
|---|---|
| Talk to the AI out loud | ChatGPT |
| Create or edit images | ChatGPT |
| Go beyond the free tier for the lowest price | ChatGPT (Go plan) |
| Work through a long report, contract or transcript | Claude |
| Write code or run code to analyze data | Claude |
| Get ready-to-use files out of the chat | Claude |
| Stick with the tool everyone already knows | ChatGPT |
Treat this as a starting point, not a rule: both can handle most of these tasks. The sections below go through each criterion with the numbers.
The two assistants at a glance
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s assistant, launched on November 30, 2022. It’s the product that brought generative AI to the mainstream. Claude is made by Anthropic, a US company founded by former OpenAI researchers. It built its reputation on the quality of its writing and on handling long documents.
Here are their plans and features, as listed on the companies’ own websites:
| Assistant | Free | Paid from | Web search | Agent mode | Voice | Images |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Limited | $8/mo | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Claude | Limited | $20/mo | Yes | Yes | — | — |
One reading tip: when a feature is missing for an assistant, it means the company doesn’t list it on the pages we checked. That’s not always proof the feature doesn’t exist at all.
Free tier: two serious ways in
Both assistants have a free plan with capped usage. That’s the best way to decide between them: try each on your real work before paying anything.
ChatGPT Free lets you ask questions, draft, search the web and chat by voice. According to OpenAI, messages that use tools, file uploads, images, voice and deep research are all capped. Past the limit, the assistant switches to a lighter model or asks you to wait. OpenAI has also said it is testing ads on the Free and Go plans, but not on Plus.
Claude Free includes, according to Anthropic’s pricing page on October 22, 2026, web search, file creation, code execution, memory across chats and app connections. Usage is limited and resets regularly. Anthropic doesn’t publish exact numbers for those limits, so a long document can eat through them quickly.

Pricing: same tiers, different entry point
The price lists are strikingly similar. The amounts below come from the official pages, in US dollars, checked on October 22, 2026. Prices can differ by country and may or may not include sales tax or VAT, so check what your account shows.
| Tier | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free, $0 | Free, $0 |
| Entry | Go, $8 a month | No equivalent plan |
| Main | Plus, $20 a month | Pro, $20 a month ($17 billed yearly) |
| Heavy use | Pro, from $100 a month | Max, from $100 a month |
| Teams | Business, $25 per user | Team, $25 (Standard seat) or $125 (Premium seat) |
Two differences stand out. First, ChatGPT has the $8 Go plan, which raises the free limits without unlocking the flagship models; Claude has nothing comparable. Second, Claude Pro drops to $17 a month if you pay for a year up front.
For heavy users, ChatGPT Pro starts at $100 with higher tiers at $200 and $500; Claude Max also starts at $100 and gives 5 or 20 times Pro’s usage. If you’re on the fence about subscribing at all, our guide to which AI subscriptions are worth the money helps you run the numbers.
Web search, agent mode and browser
Both assistants do AI web search: they read recent pages and cite their sources. Both also have an agent mode, a way to hand over a multi-step task instead of a single question. An AI agent searches, compares, fills things in, then hands you the result.
Their approaches differ:
- ChatGPT has built agentic browsing into its desktop app, Codex and its Chrome extension. Its former standalone browser, ChatGPT Atlas, has been retired.
- Claude offers the “Claude in Chrome” extension on paid plans only, and brings background task delegation into the app. Pro subscribers can also schedule tasks.
Voice and images: ChatGPT’s edge
This is the most visible day-to-day difference. ChatGPT lists voice conversations and image generation among its features. You can talk to it on your commute, ask for a birthday card illustration or touch up a photo.
For Claude, neither image generation nor a voice mode appears in the features listed on Anthropic’s site as of October 22, 2026. You can upload files for it to analyze, but if you want to create images, ChatGPT is the better fit.
Claude has its own visual strength: “artifacts”. The output appears next to the chat as a document, table, presentation or small app. That’s handy when you want to rework a text one paragraph at a time.
Long documents and code: Claude’s home turf
Say you need to review a commercial lease running to dozens of pages, or compare two versions of an annual report. That kind of work depends on the context window, meaning how much text the model can keep in mind at once.
On that front, both companies’ flagship models are now level, at around one million tokens according to models.dev. A token is a small chunk of a word. The real difference is in the tools. Claude runs code even on the free plan to analyze a spreadsheet, and produces files directly. Claude Code, its programming tool, is included with Pro. ChatGPT, for its part, includes Codex with Plus.
If writing is your main use, our guide to the best AI for writing compares assistants on that criterion alone.
The models behind each assistant
An assistant is an app. It runs on one or more models, the “engine” that generates the answers. As of October 22, 2026, ChatGPT relies on GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and Claude on Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5.
| Model | Developer | Release | Context (tokens) | Input ($/M tokens) | Output ($/M tokens) | Open weights |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | OpenAI | September 4, 2026 | 1.05 M | $10 | $50 | No |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | OpenAI | September 29, 2026 | 1.05 M | $2 | $10 | No |
| GPT-6 Luna | OpenAI | September 22, 2026 | 1.05 M | $0.10 | $0.50 | No |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | Anthropic | September 22, 2026 | 1 M | $4 | $20 | No |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Anthropic | September 28, 2026 | 1 M | $2 | $10 | No |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | Anthropic | October 7, 2026 | 1 M | $0.10 | $0.50 | No |
The prices in this table apply to developers using the models through the API, billed by the amount of text processed. They don’t affect your subscription, but they show where each model sits: premium, mid-range or lightweight.
Here is each model’s score on our weekly ranking index, built from Epoch AI’s tests:
- Claude Sonnet 5.595.9
- Claude Opus 5.595.9
- GPT-6 Astra94.7
- GPT-6.1 Sol92.1
- Claude Haiku 5.584
- GPT-6 Luna80.3
Don’t read too much into these gaps. A point or two on the index won’t show when you ask for a recipe or a meeting summary. And ChatGPT’s free tier runs on a lightweight model, not the flagship. The ChatGPT vs Claude head-to-head in our comparison tool lays out the data criterion by criterion.
Privacy: two settings to know
On individual plans, both companies may use your chats to improve their models, and both let you say no.
- ChatGPT: Settings, then Data Controls, then turn off “Improve the model for everyone”. Temporary Chats aren’t used for training and may be kept for up to 30 days. Data residency is limited to the Enterprise and Edu plans.
- Claude: training can be switched off in the privacy settings on Free, Pro and Max. Incognito chats are never used for training. Team and Enterprise plans don’t train on your data by default.
Languages
Both assistants understand and write in English, French, Spanish and many other languages, and both run on the web, desktop and mobile. Don’t pick one over the other on this point: instead, compare the tone each one gives you on an email you write often.
Who is each one for? Our verdict by profile
There’s no absolute “best”. Here is the most sensible pick for your situation.
You’re new to AI
ChatGPT, for its range. Voice, images, web search: you can explore every use case with a single tool, and the Go plan takes you a bit further for $8 a month.
You write, edit or analyze documents
Claude. Paralegal, marketing manager, grad student working on a thesis, translator: you’ll get a lot out of artifacts and file creation on long texts.
You write code
Claude, by a nose. Code execution on the free tier and Claude Code with Pro make it a direct work tool. ChatGPT Plus, with Codex, remains a solid option.
You want to talk to your AI or create visuals
ChatGPT, no question: voice and image generation are among its listed features.
You run a small team
They’re level at $25 per user. Business for ChatGPT, Team for Claude: compare how each plugs into the tools you already use, and their no-training guarantees.

Check yourself Every week you need to summarize meeting notes around thirty pages long, and you never create images. Which one should you try first?
Claude. Your main need is analyzing long documents, which is its home turf, and you don’t need image generation. Start with the free version on a real set of notes, then move to Pro if the usage limits get in your way.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT or Claude smarter?
As of October 22, 2026, Claude's models (Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5) hold the top two spots in the Epoch AI-based ranking on our site, just ahead of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra. The gap is small, though, and the ranking measures technical tests, not your everyday use. The features you need matter more.
Can I use ChatGPT and Claude for free?
Yes. Both have a free plan with usage limits. ChatGPT's free tier caps files, images and deep research, among other things. Claude's free tier includes web search, file creation and code execution, with a limited allowance that resets regularly.
Can Claude generate images like ChatGPT?
Image generation isn't among the Claude features listed on Anthropic's site as of October 22, 2026, while it is listed for ChatGPT. If creating pictures matters to you, ChatGPT is the simpler choice.
Which one is better for privacy?
Both let you opt out of having your chats used for training: under Data Controls in ChatGPT, and in Claude's privacy settings. Claude offers an incognito mode, ChatGPT offers Temporary Chats that may be kept for up to 30 days. Either way, never paste passwords or sensitive data.
Do I need to pay for both?
Rarely. For most people one subscription is enough, topped up with the other's free tier when needed. Try both free versions on real tasks first, then pay for the one you open most.
