AI assistant: your all-purpose helper

An AI assistant is a consumer app such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Le Chat that you ask, in plain language, to answer, write, summarize or analyze. It is currently the easiest way into artificial intelligence.

What an AI assistant does

An AI assistant is a chat interface connected to a large language model. You type (or speak) a request and get an answer within seconds. What sets it apart from a basic chatbot is versatility: the same tool can polish a cover letter, explain a physics concept, suggest a road trip itinerary or analyze a spreadsheet.

Depending on the service, it may also:

  • read a PDF, a photo or any file you upload;
  • search the web for recent information;
  • remember your preferences from one conversation to the next through a memory feature;
  • talk back out loud, like a voice assistant.

A workplace example

You receive a forty-page request for proposal. You ask the assistant to list the key requirements, then to draft a first response in the required format. It saves you time on reading and formatting. But checking every point is still your job, because the assistant can skip a clause or invent one.

Why it matters to you

Assistants look alike on the surface but differ on concrete points: free tier limits, subscription prices, privacy options, supported languages and available apps. ChatGPT, Claude and Le Chat do not offer the same features or the same terms. The AI assistants comparison lays out these criteria side by side, with the date each one was checked.

Myths to drop

  • “It looks up answers online.” Not always. Without web search turned on, it answers from what it learned during training, which stops at a certain date.
  • “It’s neutral and objective.” It reflects the data it was trained on, including possible biases, and the rules set by the company that runs it.
  • “It acts on my behalf.” A standard assistant answers; it does not book your train ticket. Assistants that can operate websites or software fall under the AI agent category, one step further.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an AI assistant and a chatbot?

Every AI assistant is a chatbot, but not the other way around. An AI assistant is general-purpose: it writes, translates, analyzes files, and sometimes searches the web or creates images. A customer service chatbot sticks to one narrow topic.

Do I need to pay for a good AI assistant?

Most assistants offer a free tier, with usage limits or restricted access to the most capable models. Paid plans mainly give you more volume and advanced features. The comparison tool on this site lists the plans found on official pages.

Are my conversations private?

It depends on the assistant and your settings. Several services let you opt out of having your chats used for training, or offer a temporary chat mode. Check these options before sharing anything sensitive.
