Voice assistants: talking to AI instead of typing

A voice assistant is a program you control by speaking, on a phone, a smart speaker or in a car. It turns your speech into text, works out what you want, then acts or answers out loud.

Three steps in about a second

When you say “Set a timer for ten minutes”, three building blocks work in a row:

  1. Speech recognition turns the sound of your voice into text.
  2. Understanding: the text is analyzed to grasp your intent, using natural language processing.
  3. Text-to-speech reads the reply out loud while the action is carried out.

Early consumer assistants relied on fairly rigid commands. Apple introduced Siri on October 4, 2011 alongside the iPhone 4S, as an intelligent assistant you could simply ask things out loud (Apple’s 2011 press release). Since then, voice assistants have increasingly been built on generative AI models, which lets them hold a real conversation.

Very practical uses

  • In the kitchen, hands covered in flour: start a timer, convert ounces to grams.
  • Behind the wheel: dictate a text, ask for directions without touching the screen.
  • For accessibility: people with low vision or difficulty typing can reach information more easily.
  • At the office: dictate meeting notes, then ask an AI assistant in voice mode to summarize them.

Current options include, for example, Alexa+ from Amazon and Siri with Apple Intelligence.

Why it matters to you: privacy

A voice assistant picks up sound in private spaces: your living room, your car, your office. Take a few minutes in the companion app to check whether recordings are stored, whether humans may listen to them to improve the service, and how to delete your history. Use the speaker’s physical mute button when you are having a sensitive conversation.

Common misconceptions

“It understands everything I say.” It recognizes words and guesses an intent; an ambiguous sentence can trigger the wrong action.

“Whatever it says has been fact-checked.” A voice assistant built on a language model can also be wrong or make things up.

“It’s only for smart speakers.” Your phone, watch, car and most chatbots now offer a voice mode.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a voice assistant and a chatbot like ChatGPT?

Traditionally, voice assistants handled short commands (timers, weather, music), while chatbots held long written conversations. The line is blurring: chatbots now offer voice modes, and voice assistants are adding large language models.

Is my voice assistant always listening?

Speakers and phones listen locally for a wake word (“Hey Siri”, “Alexa”…). In principle, audio is only sent to the provider's servers after that word. Accidental activations can still happen, and you can review and delete your voice history in the settings.

When did voice assistants arrive on phones?

A key milestone was Siri, which Apple unveiled on October 4, 2011 with the iPhone 4S as an intelligent assistant you could simply ask things out loud. It launched in beta in English, French and German.

Do voice assistants understand accents?

Better and better, but not perfectly. Regional accents, background noise or specialist vocabulary can cause misunderstandings. Speaking clearly and rephrasing often helps.
