ChatGPT vs Gemini: the comparison to help you choose
Pick Gemini if you already live in Google’s world (Android, Gmail, Drive, Photos) and want a very complete free version; pick ChatGPT if you want an assistant that doesn’t depend on your other tools, with an agent mode and a broad range of uses. As of October 22, 2026, their flagship models are neck and neck in the Epoch AI-based ranking on our site, so the real differences are the ecosystem, the price and privacy.
Two different philosophies
ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, is a standalone app: you open it, talk to it and it answers. It isn’t tied to any particular email account or phone.
Gemini, launched by Google in March 2023 under the name Bard, plays a different card: integration. It’s a multimodal AI that understands text, images, voice and documents, and it draws on Google Search. On paid plans, it works directly inside Gmail, Docs and Vids.
Picture two people. Emma has an Android phone, runs her life from Gmail and keeps her photos in Google Photos. Marcus uses an iPhone, has a work email that has nothing to do with Google and mainly wants an assistant to help him write and plan projects. For Emma, Gemini plugs into what she already uses. For Marcus, that advantage doesn’t exist, and ChatGPT is the natural choice.
The feature table
Here’s what each company highlights on its website, checked on October 22, 2026:
| Assistant | Free | Paid from | Web search | Agent mode | Voice | Images |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Limited | $8/mo | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Gemini | Limited | €4.99/mo | Yes | — | Yes | Yes |
Both tick most of the boxes: a free version, AI web search, voice, image creation, file uploads and memory. The clearest difference is agent mode, listed for ChatGPT but not for Gemini on the pages we checked.
The free tier: Gemini’s trump card
For a beginner, this is probably the most important point, and Gemini scores well here.
According to Google’s subscriptions page, checked on October 22, 2026, the free version of Gemini includes the Flash-Lite model, image creation and editing, Deep Research (an in-depth search that produces a report), Gemini Live (voice conversation), Canvas and Gems, which are custom assistants. All of it comes with usage limits, plus the 15 GB of Google storage that every account gets.
ChatGPT Free covers the basics too: questions, writing, web search, voice, images. But OpenAI caps messages that use tools, files, images, voice and deep research, then switches you to a lighter model. OpenAI has also said it is testing ads on its Free and Go plans.
If you don’t want to pay anything at all, our roundup of the best free AI covers every no-subscription option.
Pricing: euros at Google, dollars at OpenAI
One quirk makes the comparison harder: the Google prices we recorded come from its French page, in euros, while OpenAI publishes US prices in dollars. We don’t convert them, because exchange rates and taxes change the final amount. Always check the price your own account shows, whether you’re in the US, the UK or elsewhere.
| Tier | ChatGPT (US pricing) | Gemini (France pricing) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free, $0 | No-cost tier, €0 |
| Entry | Go, $8 a month | Google AI Plus, €4.99 a month |
| Main | Plus, $20 a month | Google AI Pro, €21.99 a month |
| Heavy use | Pro, from $100 a month | Google AI Ultra, from €99.99 a month |

Price isn’t the whole story. Google’s plans include storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos: 400 GB with AI Plus and 5 TB with AI Pro, which also adds YouTube Premium Lite. If you already pay for Google storage, part of the cost is covered. ChatGPT Plus, for its part, includes projects, custom GPTs and Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool.
At the top end, ChatGPT Pro has tiers at $200 and $500, and Google AI Ultra has a €219.99 tier. These are aimed at heavy professional use. For a full rundown of paid plans, read our guide on which AI subscription is actually worth it.
Agent mode: ChatGPT is ahead
An AI agent doesn’t just answer: you give it a goal, and it works through the steps to get there. For example, comparing three car rental offers on different websites and putting them in a table for you.
ChatGPT lists agent mode among its features. OpenAI has built agentic browsing into its desktop app, Codex and its Chrome extension; its former ChatGPT Atlas browser has been retired.
For Gemini, agent mode isn’t among the listed features. That doesn’t mean Google has none: it means Google doesn’t highlight one for the consumer assistant on the pages we checked.
Voice, images and everyday life
On voice, the two are level on paper: ChatGPT has voice conversations, Gemini has Gemini Live, included even in the free tier. On image generation, same story: both create and edit images.
The difference is context. On an Android phone, Gemini fits into the Google ecosystem you already use. On paid plans, it drafts a reply in Gmail or summarizes a Drive document without any copy and paste. ChatGPT works the same way everywhere, on Android, iPhone or a computer, and its projects, included with Plus, group your chats by topic.
The models: a tight race
Behind ChatGPT, OpenAI runs GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Gemini relies on Gemini 4 Argon for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and on Flash and Flash-Lite models for the free tier and AI Plus.
| Model | Developer | Release | Context (tokens) | Input ($/M tokens) | Output ($/M tokens) | Open weights |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 4 Argon | Google DeepMind | October 13, 2026 | 1.05 M | $2 | $10 | No |
| GPT-6 Astra | OpenAI | September 4, 2026 | 1.05 M | $10 | $50 | No |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | OpenAI | September 29, 2026 | 1.05 M | $2 | $10 | No |
| GPT-6 Luna | OpenAI | September 22, 2026 | 1.05 M | $0.10 | $0.50 | No |
This table also shows each model’s price for developers using the API, in dollars per million tokens (a token is a small chunk of a word). The contrast is striking:
- GPT-6 Astra$10
- Gemini 4 Argon$2
- GPT-6.1 Sol$2
- GPT-6 Luna$0.10
In other words, Google offers a top-tier model at a mid-range API price. As an app user, that doesn’t change your subscription price. But it shows how thin the quality gap between the two flagships is. The ChatGPT vs Gemini matchup in our comparison tool breaks these numbers down.
Privacy: different rules
This criterion often gets overlooked, and the two companies take different approaches.
- Gemini: by default, activity is kept for 18 months, and some conversations may be reviewed by trained people after being disconnected from your account. If you turn off “Keep Activity”, your chats are held for 72 hours and aren’t used to improve the models, unless you send feedback.
- ChatGPT: turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings, Data Controls. Temporary Chats aren’t used for training and may be kept for up to 30 days. Data residency is limited to the Enterprise and Edu plans.
Google itself advises against entering confidential information into Gemini. The same advice applies to ChatGPT. And if you let Gemini into your Gmail, think about what you’re comfortable having it read.
Languages
Both assistants work in English, French, Spanish and many other languages, on the web, Android and iPhone. Watch out for the plans, though: Google’s plans and their features vary by country, and the page we recorded is the French one.
Settle it in a week, for free
Rather than relying on reviews, give both free versions the same short test. Use exactly the same prompt for each, then compare.
- A planning task. “Plan a three-day weekend in Edinburgh for two adults and a child on a tight budget.” You’ll see how each one uses web search and shows its sources.
- A writing task. Ask for a polite complaint letter to your broadband provider. Compare the tone, clarity and phrasing.
- An image task. Upload a photo of a product label or a dish and ask for an explanation.
- A voice task. Ask a question while out for a walk, with Gemini Live on one side and ChatGPT’s voice mode on the other.
Each time, note which tool saved you the most time, and double-check anything important: both can be confidently wrong, which is called a hallucination. By the end of the week, the choice often makes itself.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
Neither wins on every front. As of October 22, 2026, Gemini 4 Argon sits just ahead of GPT-6 Astra in the Epoch AI-based ranking on our site, but ChatGPT offers an agent mode that Google doesn't list for Gemini. The right pick mostly depends on whether you already use Google tools every day.
Is the free version of Gemini enough?
For a lot of people, yes. According to Google, it includes image creation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chat, Canvas and Gems, with usage limits, on the Flash-Lite model. The most powerful models are kept for paid plans.
Which is cheaper, ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus?
Google lists AI Plus at €4.99 a month on its French page, while ChatGPT Go is $8 a month in the US. The two prices aren't in the same currency and vary by country, so compare what your own account shows before subscribing.
Does Gemini read my Gmail?
On paid plans, Gemini can work directly inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, according to Google's subscriptions page. For privacy, you can turn off “Keep Activity” so your chats aren't used to improve the models. Either way, avoid typing confidential information into it.
