Build an AI agent with n8n, without coding

A board of connected nodes where a message rolls from an inbox to a calendar like a pinball

To build an AI agent with n8n without coding, connect a chat trigger to the AI Agent node, then attach a language model and a tool. This tutorial builds an assistant that looks up a small product catalog in a spreadsheet and answers using the rows it retrieves. You will then check its answers, limitations, and permissions before sharing access.

What you need and what you will build

Prepare an n8n workspace you can access in your browser, an account with a model provider that offers API access, and a demonstration spreadsheet. This walkthrough uses a hosted workspace so you can skip setting up a server. Self-hosting is also possible, but it adds server administration, backups, and connection configuration.

The example uses Google Sheets and the Mistral Cloud Chat Model node. The node names and settings described here match the official documentation consulted on October 24, 2026; their location may vary in your interface. You do not need a specific version number to follow the approach.

The intended result has a narrow scope: you ask which products meet a need, the agent checks the catalog, and it answers with product references that let you verify its suggestions. It does not update inventory or place orders.

The AI Agent node documentation states that you must connect a chat model and at least one tool. This tool calling capability lets the agent retrieve information from outside the model.

If all you need is to copy columns according to fixed rules, a conventional workflow will be easier to control. AI agent vs. chatbot: what’s the difference? helps distinguish these uses, while the guide to n8n and AI covers the available architectures.

1. Prepare a demonstration catalog

Create a test spreadsheet with a tab named Catalogue. Put these headers in the first row: reference, designation, usage, disponibilite, and commentaire. Use unique product references and explicit values, with no merged cells.

Copy the following fictional dataset into the sheet. It is provided solely for this exercise:

reference | designation | usage | disponibilite | commentaire

These rows do not represent a real offer or a customer case study. They let you establish the expected answer before asking the model a question.

Also add an ambiguous product name or leave a comment empty. This will help you check whether the agent asks for clarification or invents a feature. A useful exercise tests missing information as well as straightforward answers.

Do not use your full catalog yet. Remove personal data, internal margins, and confidential information: rows returned by the tool may be sent to the model provider.

Finally, define a simple business rule: availability comes exclusively from the corresponding column. A sentence generated by the model does not reserve a product, and availability recorded in a spreadsheet does not guarantee real-time stock.

2. Set up the chat input

In a new workflow, add Chat Trigger and AI Agent, then link their main connections. Give the workflow a descriptive name, such as Demo catalog assistant.

Keep Make Chat Publicly Available disabled while building the workflow. The Chat Trigger node lets you use a test conversation without immediately opening public access. Also leave Load Previous Session set to Off for this first setup.

In AI Agent, set the user message source to Take from previous node automatically. The message supplied by Chat Trigger will then arrive in the expected field, named chatInput. Avoid replacing that message with a fixed instruction, which would make the agent answer the same request every time.

Your workflow should have this structure:

Chat Trigger → AI Agent
├── Chat Model : modèle de conversation
└── Tool : consultation du catalogue

The connectors below the agent attach its capabilities. Simply placing a tool after AI Agent on the main workflow path does not automatically make it available to the agent.

Leave interface improvements for later. Your first goal is to send a request, find the corresponding execution, and understand which data passed through it. Keep the conversation internal until you can confidently inspect those details.

3. Connect the model and define its role

From AI Agent’s Chat Model connector, add Mistral Cloud Chat Model. Create or select the provider credentials, then use Model to choose a model that supports tool calling. The available list depends on the models your account can access, as explained in the connector documentation.

The connection uses an API key. Create it in your provider account and enter it in n8n’s credentials, never in the instructions or spreadsheet. The official Mistral authentication instructions explain the requirements for enabling API access.

In the AI Agent options, add System Message and paste this instruction:

This system prompt defines the task, the evidence the agent should use, and its behavior when something fails. It does not replace technical restrictions.

Also set Max Iterations to a low limit suitable for the exercise, such as four. This is a teaching choice, not a value recommended by the vendor. The corresponding options are described in the Tools Agent documentation.

4. Add the spreadsheet lookup tool

From AI Agent’s Tool connector, search for Google Sheets. Rename the node Lire_catalogue so its purpose is clear and its name matches the instructions.

Configure the following fields:

  • Credential to connect with: your Google connection;
  • Resource: Sheet Within Document;
  • Operation: Get Row(s);
  • Document: the demonstration spreadsheet;
  • Sheet: the Catalogue tab.

Keep the document and tab fixed in the configuration. For this small catalog, do not add any filters: the tool will retrieve the rows, and the model will select relevant products. The Get Row(s) documentation confirms that the operation reads rows and normally treats the first row as the header.

If the interface provides a tool description field, explain that the tool reads product references, uses, and availability from the demonstration catalog without changing anything. The agent needs to understand when to use it.

For authentication, n8n Cloud offers a managed Google connection for this service. With self-hosting, you need to configure your own OAuth credentials. Follow the Google connection documentation for your environment.

Run a test read and inspect the returned fields before trying the conversation. Misplaced headers or the wrong tab can produce a plausible answer based on incorrect data.

This setup deliberately uses a small dataset. Reading an entire large catalog for every request would increase the context sent to the model and the cost. At that point, you would need a filtered search.

5. Check answers and tool calls

Open the test conversation and send a complete request:

Je cherche un article disponible pour ranger mes accessoires.
Indiquez sa référence et ses limites connues.

With the sample data, the answer should use DEMO-C and mention its light protection. This is an expected test result, not a measurement of the model’s performance.

Next, open the execution in n8n. Check that Lire_catalogue was called, that its returned rows match the spreadsheet, and that the answer adds no properties missing from the data. Convincing wording alone does not establish that the workflow works correctly.

Then run these tests:

Test requestExpected behaviorWhat to check
An available product for lighting a deskSuggest DEMO-ACorrect reference and power source
Restock date for the standState that the date is unknownNo invented date
A product guaranteed to be waterproofState that the information is missingNo inferred guarantee
Reserve a carrying pouchExplain that the agent can only look up informationNo claim that a reservation was made

Also test a connection failure: the agent should report the failure rather than present its general knowledge as catalog data.

Finally, change a demonstration cell and ask the question again in a new conversation. This helps verify that the information comes from a recent read. Record failures and their causes before changing the instructions; changing several settings at once makes diagnosis harder.

6. Check permissions before sharing access

The agent can now retrieve external data. Even without write access, this capability requires you to control who can ask questions and what information may appear in the answers.

Apply least privilege: use a dedicated account and restrict its access to the required document. Choosing a read operation in the workflow does not automatically reduce the permissions granted to the Google connection.

Also test a cell containing a hostile instruction, such as a request to ignore the rules and reveal information. The expected behavior is to treat that cell as content. This test does not prove comprehensive protection; it only exposes certain unwanted behaviors.

Do not add any sending or editing tools to complete this exercise. If you add them later, require human approval for each sensitive operation. The n8n Human review mechanism pauses the relevant tool call until it is approved or rejected. An instruction that merely tells the agent to ask for confirmation does not provide that technical safeguard.

To share the assistant, select an authentication method in Chat Trigger and test access with an account intended for users. Do not treat a hard-to-guess URL as access protection.

The guide to securing AI agents expands on these checks. If you later add an MCP connection, use the MCP server directory as a starting point, then examine the selected server’s permissions.

Common problems

The agent answers without checking the catalog. Check the Tool connection and make sure the name Lire_catalogue matches the instructions. Ask a question whose answer explicitly depends on a cell in the document.

The AI Agent node asks for a tool. Connecting a model is not enough. Check that Google Sheets is attached as a tool, rather than simply placed on the main workflow path.

The spreadsheet cannot be found or access is denied. Check the Google account in use, the selected document, and the permissions granted. Avoid changing the model’s instructions to solve an authentication problem.

The answer uses the wrong columns. Inspect the Get Row(s) output directly. Correct the headers and source tab before running the full workflow again.

The agent fails after several attempts. Check whether the model supports tools and inspect the returned errors. Increasing Max Iterations without understanding the cause may simply generate more calls.

Costs rise as conversations continue. According to its documentation, Chat Trigger starts an execution for each user message. The model may also make several calls during that execution. Track n8n usage and model provider usage separately; the LLM pricing calculator helps estimate the latter.

Do not measure only the length of the final answer: instructions, catalog data, and intermediate exchanges also contribute to the context processed by the model.

Checklist before making the agent available

You have a prototype when the tool works and its answers match the data. Shared use still requires repeatable checks, particularly after changing the model or the spreadsheet structure.

  • The authorized document and tab are fixed in the configuration.
  • The connected account has only the access it needs.
  • Answers cite product references and identify missing information.
  • A failed read does not lead to an invented answer.
  • Tests include ambiguous requests and hostile instructions.
  • Conversation access is protected before sharing.
  • Workflow and model costs are tracked separately.
  • Any future sensitive action will require approval enforced by the workflow.

To extend this setup to message handling, read Automate your inbox with an AI agent. For platform selection, see the n8n vs. Make comparison. The success criterion here remains concrete: a verifiable answer based on a tool whose access permissions you control.

Frequently asked questions

Can you build an n8n AI agent for free?

Your budget depends on hosting and your model provider. A trial or available credits do not guarantee that the agent will remain free to run. Check the terms for n8n and the API you use separately.

Do you need to install an MCP server to use an n8n agent?

No. A native tool connected to the AI Agent node is enough to get started. MCP becomes useful when a service exposes the functions you need through that protocol. Adding this connection also means checking its permissions and deciding whether to trust the server.

Why doesn't my n8n agent remember the previous message?

An agent without memory handles each request independently. To maintain a conversation, you need to configure memory and check the session identifier. Conversation memory does not replace the business data retrieved by a tool.

Can this agent automatically answer customer questions?

This setup is a technical starting point, not a validated customer service system. You still need to check access rights, incorrect answers, the data sent to the model, and options for escalating to a person. Start by reviewing responses before sending them.
