What is an MCP server?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, launched by Anthropic in late 2024 and then adopted by most vendors, that lets an AI assistant or agent use outside tools in a uniform way. An MCP server is a small program that exposes those tools: reading a database, searching a GitHub repository, sending a Slack message, driving a browser… The agent (the client) discovers the available tools and decides itself when to call them.

Connecting an MCP server therefore means giving your agent new permissions. It is handy, and it is also the main entry point for prompt-injection attacks: a server that reads outside content (web pages, emails, tickets) can pass hidden instructions to the agent.

Each category has its comparison page: a table of all detailed servers, official servers, choice and security tips.

The MCP ecosystem in figures

Of the 3,203 detailed servers, 434 are published by the service's own vendor, 74% received a commit in the last three months, 587 offer a remote version (no install) and 621 need at least one API key or token. The three largest categories are “Developer tools”, “Memory and knowledge”, and “Finance and payments”.

Installing an MCP server safely

  • Prefer official (◆) or widely followed servers, with recent commits.
  • Read the list of exposed tools and disable those you do not need (write, delete, send).
  • Use limited-permission tokens: read-only when possible, never your admin account.
  • Avoid combining on one agent a server that reads outside content, access to your private data and a way to send information out: that trio enables leaks.

Review your setup with the AI agent security check.

Frequently asked questions

How many MCP servers are there?

Our index lists 43,701 as of October 25, 2026, combining the official registry and the community list. Many are personal experiments: only 3,203 pass our profile threshold (documented public repository, adoption or official status).

What is the most popular MCP server?

By GitHub stars, REA leads (377,231 stars), ahead of Markitdown and Browser use. Stars measure the repository's popularity, not necessarily the server's quality.

Are MCP servers free?

The vast majority are open source and free. However, the service they give access to (an API, a SaaS) may be paid, and the agent using them consumes model calls.

Which agents work with MCP servers?

With any MCP-compatible client: Claude Desktop and Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, VS Code, most open-source agents in the registry and many self-hosted chat interfaces.
