AI agents: the full registry, compared and scored
Our registry tracks 388 AI agents: 347 open-source projects checked on GitHub and 41 proprietary services taken from their official pages. The best scored are OpenClaw, OpenCode, and Cline. 77% of open-source projects received a commit in the last month.

What we call an AI agent
An AI agent is a program that receives a goal, chooses the steps itself and acts with tools: it reads and edits files, runs commands, opens web pages, calls APIs or sends messages, then checks the result and tries again if needed. A chatbot answers; an agent acts. That difference changes everything about risk: an agent has permissions, and what it reads can influence it.
The registry covers ready-to-use agents (personal assistants, coding agents, browser agents…) and the frameworks used to build them. An open-source project only enters if it passes an adoption threshold and stays documented; a proprietary service, only if how it works and its price are published. Each profile shows the date it was checked.

The registry in figures
320 agents (82%) can run on your own machine or server. On the open-source side, 148 projects use the MIT licence and 107 Apache 2.0, two licences that allow commercial use; 29 use a GPL or AGPL licence, which requires sharing your changes in some cases. The most common language is Python (154 projects), ahead of TypeScript (115).
Of the 41 proprietary services, 21 offer a free tier and the first paid plan costs a median of $20 per month. 77 agents are rated high risk: they combine sensitive access (terminal, files, messaging, payment) without human approval by default.
Agent families
We put each agent in one family based on what it mainly does. For each: what it is for, what to watch, and the best-scored projects.
Coding agents 74
They read a repository, edit files, run the tests and fix things until everything passes, in a terminal or an editor.
Watch out : A coding agent runs commands on your machine: work on a Git branch, review the changes and isolate it in a container for long tasks.
Best scored : OpenCode (95), Cline (94), OpenHands (91), Codex (89), and Open Interpreter (89).
Personal assistants 46
General-purpose agents, often self-hosted and driven from a messaging app, that act for you on your files, accounts and services.
Watch out : A personal assistant often combines access to private data, reading outside content and sending messages: the combination that enables data leaks through prompt injection.
Best scored : OpenClaw (95), Hermes Agent (90), nanobot (87), CowAgent (87), and QwenPaw (86).
Browser agents 21
Agents that open pages, click, fill in forms and extract information in place of a human.
Watch out : Every page visited may hide instructions: do not leave a browser agent logged into sensitive accounts without action approval.
Best scored : Browser Use (92), Stagehand (84), Skyvern (83), BrowserOS (81), and OpenCLI (80).
Computer use 17
Agents that see the screen and drive the keyboard and mouse of a computer or phone.
Watch out : An agent that controls the computer has the same rights as you: run it in a dedicated virtual machine.
Best scored : Midscene (81), Cua (80), Mobilerun (79), GenericAgent (73), and OpenBot (72).
Deep research 18
Agents that search, read and cross-check dozens of sources to produce a sourced report.
Watch out : An agent's report may cite misread or invented sources: check the links before reusing a figure.
Best scored : DeerFlow (87), GPT Researcher (80), Open Science (76), Feynman (74), and Local Deep Research (74).
Automation 26
Platforms, often visual, that chain steps, apps and models into workflows with or without an agent.
Watch out : A workflow runs unattended: limit the credentials it holds and log what it sends.
Best scored : Langflow (93), n8n (85), Sim (85), AutoGPT (84), and Dify (83).
Multi-agent 43
Systems that split a task between several specialised agents passing work to one another.
Watch out : More agents mean higher bills and chained errors: set a budget and a maximum number of steps.
Best scored : Orca (91), CrewAI (88), Agno (87), Paperclip (86), and AgentScope (85).
Frameworks 28
Libraries for building your own agents in code: loop, tools, memory, orchestration.
Watch out : A framework does not protect you by default: approval, minimal rights and sandboxing are up to you.
Best scored : LangChain (93), LangGraph (87), Haystack (84), DSPy (83), and Agent Development Kit (83).
Voice agents 3
Agents that listen and answer out loud, on the phone or in an app, in real time.
Watch out : A voice agent records voices, which are sensitive personal data: inform callers and check where recordings are stored.
Best scored : Pipecat (82), LiveKit Agents (81), and Vision Agents (73).
Data and RAG 15
Agents that query databases and company documents to answer questions or produce analyses.
Watch out : Give it read-only access and check generated queries before any data change.
Best scored : RAGFlow (91), LlamaIndex (85), MaxKB (83), PageIndex (79), and txtai (78).
Business agents 52
Agents specialised in one job: customer support, sales, finance, legal, HR, security.
Watch out : A business agent acts on the company's behalf: define what it may promise, refund or change, and keep a record of its decisions.
Best scored : DeepTutor (82), Vibe-Trading (81), PentAGI (77), GenOffice (74), and HolmesGPT (74).
Agent infrastructure 28
Technical building blocks for agents: memory, execution sandboxes, model gateways, observability, evaluation.
Watch out : An infrastructure component sees prompts, keys and data pass through: self-host it or read the service's retention policy.
Best scored : OmniRoute (90), Mem0 (89), Firecrawl (86), Claude-Mem (86), and Cognee (85).
Chat interfaces 17
Multi-model chat interfaces, often self-hostable, with built-in tools, agents and MCP servers.
Watch out : The interface stores your API keys and conversation history: protect its access and backups.
Best scored : AnythingLLM (89), Cherry Studio (88), AionUi (85), Happy (84), and Open WebUI (83).
How to choose an AI agent
- Start from the task, not the trendy name: coding, automating a process, researching, driving a browser or answering customers call for different families.
- Decide where it runs: a self-hosted agent keeps your data at home but needs a server and maintenance; a hosted service starts in five minutes but sees your data.
- Check activity: a project with no commit for six months no longer keeps up with new models or discovered flaws.
- Limit permissions: give the agent minimal access, require human approval for irreversible actions and isolate it in a container or virtual machine.
- Count the real cost: an open-source agent is free, but model calls are paid per use; estimate them with the LLM price calculator.
Still unsure? The “Which AI agent?” quiz asks five questions and suggests three agents from the registry, with the reason for each pick.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best open-source AI agent?
On our grid (adoption, activity, framework), OpenClaw (95/100), OpenCode (95/100), and Cline (94/100) come first. The best one for you depends on the task: a coding agent and a personal assistant are not comparable.
Are AI agents free?
The 347 open-source agents in the registry are free to install, but you pay for the model they call (or run it locally). Among the 41 proprietary services, 21 have a limited free tier.
What is the most popular AI agent?
By GitHub stars, OpenClaw leads with 392,941 stars as of October 25, 2026, ahead of DeepSeek Harness and Hermes Agent.
Can you self-host an AI agent?
Yes: 320 agents in the registry are self-hostable, on a computer, a mini server or a VPS. With a local model, no data leaves your premises; check the memory needed with the VRAM calculator.
How is the score out of 100 calculated?
It adds up adoption (stars, forks), activity (commits and releases over the last 6 months) and framework (licence, documentation, regular releases). It measures neither answer quality nor security: these are public data, recalculated at each check.
