Perplexity AI: the AI search engine, and who it's really for

By The Info Agent IA editorial team ·

A person reading a tablet in a bright library, linked by threads of light to open pages, an image of a search that cites its sources.

Perplexity is an answer engine: you ask a question, it searches the web and writes a summary with links to the sources it used. It is built for people who want information they can verify, and much less for those who mainly want to draft long texts or create images for free.

What is Perplexity?

Perplexity is made by Perplexity AI, a US company. Where ChatGPT or Claude are first and foremost chat assistants, Perplexity starts with a web search. Every answer comes with numbered sources you can click through.

It is the textbook case of AI search: instead of a list of blue links to sort through yourself, you get a written summary along with the pages it was built from. That saves real time, as long as you keep the habit of checking.

Under the hood, Perplexity runs its in-house model, Sonar, described on our Perplexity lab profile. On paid plans, it also gives access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and other providers.

How it works in practice

Using it is straightforward. You type a question in plain English, for example “What documents do I need to renew a passport?” or “What does the latest research say about remote work and productivity?”. Perplexity runs a search, reads several pages and answers in a few paragraphs, with numbers pointing to each source.

You can then ask a follow-up, just like in a chat: “And for a child under 18?”. The tool keeps track of the conversation.

Two modes go further than a basic search:

  • Pro Searches, more thorough searches, capped at 3 per day on the free version;
  • Research mode, an in-depth search that produces a longer report, capped at 1 query per month on the free version.

Who is Perplexity for?

Perplexity is not “the best AI” across the board, but it fits some profiles very well.

  • Students: to get a handle on a topic, find articles and trace claims back to their sources. Education Pro, at 10 dollars a month, is aimed squarely at them. Our guide to the best AI for students compares the options.
  • Journalists, researchers and analysts: to follow a story and quickly find out where a piece of information comes from.
  • Curious minds: to make sense of the news, plan a trip or untangle some paperwork, with links to read further.
  • Professionals who run searches every day and need to cite where their facts come from.

It is a weaker fit if your main need is writing long documents, digging deep into your own files, or generating images on the free tier. For those jobs, a general-purpose assistant is usually more comfortable. Our roundup of the best free AI covers the alternatives.

Comet, Perplexity’s browser

Perplexity also makes Comet, a Chromium-based web browser that has been free for everyone since October 2, 2025. It builds in Perplexity search plus an agent, Comet Assistant, that can browse, click and fill in forms on your behalf. According to Perplexity’s help center, the agent’s requests are not included in the free plan.

A browsing agent reads pages written by anyone. A booby-trapped page can hide instructions meant to hijack it: that is prompt injection. Perplexity describes a layered defense, but no vendor promises complete protection. Keep sensitive actions, such as payments, under your own approval.

The limits to know about

Sources do not guarantee accuracy

Citing sources is real progress, but a summary can still distort an article, blend two facts together or lean on an unreliable page. Hallucinations, false statements delivered with confidence, are still possible. Open the links before you reuse a figure, a date or a piece of advice.

Your searches and your data

By default, the AI data retention setting is turned on for Free, Pro and Max accounts, which means Perplexity may use your searches to improve its services. You can turn it off in Preferences. Incognito mode does not keep your searches at all. Perplexity does not state that personal users’ data is hosted in the European Union.

Check yourself Perplexity gives you a precise figure tagged with source 2. What do you do before using it in a document?

You open source 2 to confirm the figure is really there, in the same context and for the same date. If the page does not contain it, or comes from an unreliable site, look for the data from the official body concerned.

Four habits for using it well

  • Ask a real question rather than a string of keywords: specify the country, the time frame or the level of detail you want.
  • Look at what kind of sources it used: an official site, an established outlet or a study carry more weight than a forum or an anonymous blog.
  • Ask for a specific source when a claim is not tied to any link, or rephrase the question.
  • Use incognito mode for sensitive searches about health, money or your private life.

Perplexity or a general-purpose assistant?

If you mostly want sourced answers, Perplexity is an excellent starting point. If you want a do-it-all tool, an assistant like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini will be more versatile. Frequently asked questions

Is Perplexity free?

Yes. As of October 22, 2026, the free version offers near-unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches per day and 1 Research query per month, according to Perplexity's help center. It does not include advanced models or image generation.

Can you trust Perplexity's answers?

Perplexity cites its sources, which makes its answers easy to check, but citations do not guarantee accuracy. A summary can distort an article or rely on a weak page. Open the links before reusing any important piece of information.

What is the difference between Perplexity and ChatGPT?

Perplexity starts from a web search and attaches numbered sources to every answer. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant built more for conversation, writing and creative work, and it can also search the web. Many people use both for different jobs.

Is Perplexity Pro worth it?

Pro costs 20 dollars a month as of October 22, 2026 and unlocks advanced models from several labs plus more in-depth searches. It mostly makes sense for regular professional research. For a handful of searches a day, the free tier is often enough.

Does Perplexity use my searches?

By default, the AI data retention setting is turned on for Free, Pro and Max accounts, which lets Perplexity use your searches to improve its services. You can switch it off in Preferences, or use incognito mode for a one-off search.
