A browser built around an agent

Comet belongs to the new wave of AI browsers. It carries over what Perplexity is known for (answers with sources, page summaries) and adds Comet Assistant, an AI agent that works in your tabs for you: opening pages, clicking, filling in forms. It launched on July 9, 2025 for Max subscribers and became free for everyone on October 2, 2025. It’s available on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.

What you actually pay for

The download is free; the agent isn’t. According to Perplexity’s help center, Comet Assistant is not included in the free plan. It comes with paid subscriptions, subject to monthly limits:

PlanPrice (billed annually)Agent access
Free$0Browser and search, no Comet Assistant
Perplexity Pro$17/monthIncluded, monthly limits
Perplexity Max$167/monthIncluded, higher limits

An Education Pro plan at $10 a month is available to eligible students. The pages we checked don’t list month-to-month pricing or the interface languages.

The risk to understand: prompt injection

A browsing agent reads pages anyone can write. A booby-trapped page can hide instructions that try to take control of it: this is prompt injection. The stakes are high because the agent acts with your logged-in sessions, from email to online accounts.

In February 2026 Perplexity described its security approach: layered defenses with classifiers and confirmation prompts, an external audit by Trail of Bits, BrowseSafe, an open source detection model released in December 2025, and a bug bounty program. These measures lower the risk; they don’t remove it, and no vendor claims full protection.

Good habits

  • Stay in control: approve sensitive actions yourself, the human-in-the-loop principle.
  • Don’t leave the agent unattended on banking or government sites.
  • Use a separate profile for automated tasks.

Comet keeps passwords and payment data local and encrypted. For a different take on the agentic browser, see Opera Neon.

Frequently asked questions

Is Comet free?

The browser has been free for everyone since October 2, 2025. However, according to Perplexity's help center, Comet Assistant agent tasks are not part of the free plan: you need Pro or Max, which come with monthly limits.

Which devices does Comet run on?

Perplexity offers Comet for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Because it's built on Chromium, the interface and most extensions will feel familiar to Chrome users.

What is prompt injection and why does it matter?

It's a technique where instructions are hidden inside a web page to hijack the agent reading it. An agent acting with your logged-in sessions could be pushed into doing things you never asked for.

Where are my passwords stored?

According to Perplexity, passwords and payment details saved in Comet are stored locally on your device in encrypted form.
