A company built around safety
Anthropic was founded in early 2021 in San Francisco by a team of AI researchers led by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei. Its tagline sums up its positioning: AI research and products that put safety at the frontier.
Legally, Anthropic is a public benefit corporation whose stated purpose is the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity. An unusual body, the Long-Term Benefit Trust, takes part in its governance alongside stockholders. The company is also known for its work on Constitutional AI, alignment and interpretability, the effort to understand what happens inside a model.
One family: Claude
Every Anthropic model carries the Claude name. The family comes in lines of different strength: Haiku for fast, high-volume tasks; Sonnet for the balance of speed and intelligence; Opus for long-running agentic work; and top-of-range lines such as Fable and Mythos. Current models read text and images and can call external tools, which makes them a common building block for an AI agent.
The policy here is simple: no open-weight models. You cannot download Claude or install it on your own server.
How to access Claude
- Claude, the assistant: on the web and as apps for iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. Plans and features are on the Claude page.
- Claude Code: a dedicated product for software development.
- The Claude API and the Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry platforms, to build the models into your own applications.
What sets Anthropic apart
In practice, Anthropic stands out less for the breadth of its catalog than for its focus: text, code and agentic work, with no image or video generation. It also regularly publishes research on the safety and transparency of its models, which matters to organizations with strict compliance needs.
