An assistant that lives in your browser
Brave launched Leo on desktop in November 2023 and later brought it to Android and iOS. Its main advantage is where it sits: Leo can see the page you have open. You can ask it to summarize a long article, explain a technical passage, translate text, analyze a PDF or answer a question using Brave Search. It also helps with writing and coding and can tidy up your tabs. On iOS, voice input saves typing.
That puts Leo in the same family as AI browsers such as Comet and ChatGPT Atlas, since retired by OpenAI, with a different emphasis: Brave leads with privacy rather than automation.
Privacy: what Brave says
Brave describes several safeguards. Requests go through a relay server that separates your IP address from the content, responses are not retained for training, and chat history is stored locally (temporary chats are also available). Premium subscribers get tokens that prove they have paid without linking payment to usage.
On October 15, 2026, Brave added end-to-end encryption for the GLM 5.3 Flash model: according to the company, prompts are encrypted in the browser and can only be decrypted inside a hardware-isolated environment. Our explainer on GDPR and AI helps you weigh claims like these.
Models, plans and limits
Leo offers several large language models: open-weight models hosted by Brave (Qwen, DeepSeek, Kimi, Mistral, Nemotron, GLM and others) and, on Premium, Claude models from Anthropic. The lineup changes often, so the model picker in the browser is the reference. You can also plug in your own local or remote model.
The free tier has usage limits that vary with demand. Leo Premium ($14.99 per month as of October 22, 2026) raises those limits and opens up more capable models.
The main drawback is that Leo is tied to Brave: if you use Chrome, Safari or Edge, you would have to switch. Agentic browsing is still experimental and should not be trusted with sensitive tasks; our Can I trust an agent? tool helps you decide. Leo is available in the US, UK and EU wherever the browser is, with no announced regional restrictions.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to use Brave Leo?
No. The free version works without signing in, right inside the Brave browser. You only need an account to subscribe to Leo Premium.
How much is Leo Premium?
As of October 22, 2026, Leo Premium costs $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial. It unlocks more models, higher usage limits and early access to new features.
Can Brave see my Leo conversations?
Brave says conversations are not kept for model training, IP addresses are not collected and chat history stays on your device. Since October 2026, the GLM 5.3 Flash model also offers end-to-end encryption.
Can Leo browse websites for me?
An agentic feature called AI browsing is in early testing. You have to switch it on manually in the browser's experimental flags, and it runs in a profile isolated from your normal browsing data.
