Version control MCP servers: comparison and full list
The Version control category lists 17 open-source MCP servers, checked on GitHub. The best scored on our grid are GitHub, GitWarren, and MCP server azure devops. 71% received a commit in the last three months.
What Version control MCP servers are for
Version control MCP servers give an AI assistant access to code repositories and the discussions surrounding changes. Depending on the integration, an agent can read files, inspect pull requests, consult issues or perform repository management tasks. These tools support developers, technical leads and teams tracking software changes. The GitHub integration covers repositories, pull requests and issues. MCP git ingest focuses on reading and analyzing GitHub repositories. You might ask: “Summarize this pull request and identify the files that need careful review.” The available actions depend on the server, your account permissions and the tools enabled for the session.
Example uses:
- Summarize a pull request by connecting code changes with the discussion recorded during its review.
- Inspect repository files to explain the project structure to someone who is joining the team.
- Find issues associated with a change before preparing release notes for colleagues or project users.
- Prepare an issue update or pull request response for someone to review before it is submitted.

Choosing and securing
Match the server to your hosting platform and required operations. Repository reading does not imply support for managing pull requests. Check whether the integration is official or community maintained, along with maintenance activity, licensing and supported platform versions. Review token permissions, repository restrictions, local or remote deployment and activity logging. For writing operations, examine how proposed changes are reviewed and approved before execution.
Repositories can expose confidential code, forgotten credentials and infrastructure details. Limit access to the projects needed and use read-only permissions for analysis. Deleting resources, publishing changes or modifying branches requires suitable approval controls. Files, issues and comments may contain prompt injection attempts. Treat their contents as project data rather than authorization to run commands, disclose secrets or change the assistant's operating instructions.
Before connecting a server to an agent with access to your data, run the AI agent security check.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Version control MCP server?
On our grid (adoption, maintenance, framework), GitHub (90/100), GitWarren (73/100), and MCP server azure devops (71/100) come first. The right choice mostly depends on the service you need and the rights you are willing to grant.
Are these servers free?
82% declare an open-source licence and are free to use. 3 need an API key: the connected service may be paid.
Does code analysis require write access to my repository?
Code analysis can use read-only access when the server and hosting platform support it. Inspect both the exposed tools and the token permissions. Write access is needed only for operations that change resources, so it should not be granted simply to make repository contents available to the assistant.
Can I merge a change based only on the assistant's review?
An assistant's review can highlight areas to investigate, but it depends on the available context and can miss defects. Keep your tests, review requirements and branch protections in place. Use the output as supporting information within the approval process your team already follows for merging changes.
