Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Assistant Is Right for You?
Pick Claude if you write a lot, work through long documents or code, and pick Gemini if you live in Google’s ecosystem (Android, Gmail, Drive) or want the most generous free tier. As of October 22, 2026, their best models are almost tied, so the real differences come down to features, price and how well each one fits the tools you already use.
Claude and Gemini at a glance
Claude is the assistant built by Anthropic, a US company founded by former OpenAI researchers. It has earned a reputation for strong writing, long-document analysis and programming. It runs on the web, on desktop and on mobile, and it relies on three models: Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5.
Gemini is Google’s assistant. It launched in March 2023 as Bard, then took the name of Google’s model family. It is a multimodal AI: it understands text, images, voice and documents. Its biggest strength is integration. On paid plans, Gemini works right inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, and it draws on Google Search.
Both run on a large language model, and both can be confidently wrong. But they are not aimed at quite the same people, and that should drive your choice.
The comparison at a glance
Here are the features and plans listed on Anthropic’s and Google’s websites as of October 22, 2026:
| Assistant | Free | Paid from | Web search | Agent mode | Voice | Images |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude | Limited | $20/mo | Yes | Yes | — | — |
| Gemini | Limited | €4.99/mo | Yes | — | Yes | Yes |
When a cell says a feature is not specified, it means the company does not clearly list it on its official pages, not necessarily that the feature is missing. Here are the differences that matter day to day:
| Criterion | Claude | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Yes, capped usage | Yes, Flash-Lite model |
| Entry-level plan | Pro, $20 a month | AI Plus, €4.99 a month |
| Main paid plan | Pro, $20 a month | AI Pro, €21.99 a month |
| Top tier | Max, from $100 a month | AI Ultra, from €99.99 a month |
| Image generation | Not specified by Anthropic | Yes, even on the free tier |
| Code execution, file creation | Yes, even on the free tier | Not specified in our data |
| Office suite integration | Microsoft 365 extension (Pro) | Gmail, Docs, Drive (paid plans) |
| Storage included | None | 15 GB free, up to 5 TB with AI Pro |

Keep in mind that the two price lists use different currencies, that Google’s prices vary by country, and that Google’s plans bundle cloud storage and other non-AI perks. Comparing “$20 versus €21.99” is not enough on its own: think about what you will actually use.
Flagship models: practically a tie
The assistant is only the interface. What actually answers you is a model. Here are each company’s flagship models, with their developer pricing and their context window, meaning how much text they can take into account at once:
| Model | Developer | Release | Context (tokens) | Input ($/M tokens) | Output ($/M tokens) | Open weights |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | Anthropic | September 22, 2026 | 1 M | $4 | $20 | No |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Anthropic | September 28, 2026 | 1 M | $2 | $10 | No |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | Anthropic | October 7, 2026 | 1 M | $0.10 | $0.50 | No |
| Gemini 4 Argon | Google DeepMind | October 13, 2026 | 1.05 M | $2 | $10 | No |
And here is how they score on the index behind our weekly ranking, which averages several reasoning, math and coding tests:
Put simply, the gap at the top is tiny. What matters more is which model your plan unlocks. At Google, the free tier uses a Flash-Lite model and AI Plus a Flash model; Gemini 4 Argon is reserved for AI Pro and AI Ultra, according to Google’s official subscriptions page. At Anthropic, Pro gives you access to more models than the free plan. To weigh two specific options side by side, our Claude vs Gemini comparison page lines up their data.
Free tiers: who gives you more?
On paper, Gemini’s free tier is the more generous one. With a regular Google account you get chat, image creation and editing, Deep Research (an in-depth search that produces a report), Gemini Live for voice conversations, Canvas and Gems (custom assistants), plus 15 GB of storage. The trade-off: it runs on the lightest model in the lineup.
Claude’s free plan bets on other strengths: web search, file creation (spreadsheets, documents, presentations), code execution to analyze data, memory across chats and app connections. Its main limit is volume. With long documents, you can hit the usage cap quickly, even though it resets regularly. Anthropic does not publish exact numbers for these limits.

Paid plans, tier by tier
At Anthropic, Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. It adds more usage, Claude Code for programming, Projects, scheduled tasks and the Claude in Chrome extension. Max plans start at $100 a month and give you 5 or 20 times the usage of Pro. For teams, the Team plan starts at $25 per seat per month.
At Google, the ladder is more gradual. On the French pricing page, AI Plus costs €4.99 a month and brings the Flash model, doubled limits, Gemini in Gmail and 400 GB of storage. AI Pro, at €21.99, unlocks Gemini 4 Argon, quadruples the limits and includes 5 TB. AI Ultra starts at €99.99.
In our view, AI Plus is the cheapest subscription in this comparison, but it does not include Google’s best model. If you are unsure whether any subscription is worth it, our analysis which AI subscription is actually worth the money digs into that question.
Claude’s home turf: writing, analysis, code
People who produce a lot of text often pick Claude. It drafts, rewrites and summarizes, and its “artifacts” show the result next to the conversation, which is handy for polishing a letter, an outline or a small app. Its large context window lets it handle a full contract, report or transcript.
For programming, Claude Code, included with Pro, is Anthropic’s dedicated development tool. Anthropic has also brought background task delegation into Claude, which moves it closer to an agent that can chain several steps together.
A concrete example: you need to compare two 20-page home renovation quotes. You drop both into the chat, ask for a table of price and warranty differences, then for an email with follow-up questions for the contractor. That is exactly the kind of job where Claude feels at home.
Gemini’s home turf: Google everywhere
Gemini pulls ahead as soon as your data lives with Google. On a paid plan it works directly inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, which saves a lot of copying and pasting. It is available on the web, on Android and on iPhone. It generates images and handles voice conversations even on the free tier.
A concrete example: you are planning a family trip. From Gmail, you ask Gemini to summarize your booking emails, then to suggest an itinerary that you paste into a shared Google Doc. The integration saves time, as long as you are comfortable letting the assistant access that data.
Check yourself You use an iPhone, Outlook and Word at work, and you mostly need to analyze long reports. Which assistant looks like the better fit?
Probably Claude. Gemini’s main advantage, its Gmail and Drive integration, will not help you much, while long-document analysis is one of Claude’s strengths, and its Pro plan also offers a Microsoft 365 extension. Nothing stops you from trying both free tiers before paying.
Your data: two different approaches
Both companies let you opt out of training, but in different ways.
- Claude: on individual plans, you can turn off training on your chats in your privacy settings. Incognito chats are never used for training, and the Team and Enterprise plans do not train models on your data by default.
- Gemini: you need to turn off “Keep Activity.” Your chats are then held for 72 hours to answer you, without being used to improve the models. By default, activity is kept for 18 months, and some conversations may be reviewed by trained people.
Either way, never paste a password, health information or a confidential document. Our guide to adjusting privacy settings in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini walks you through it step by step.
Verdict: who should pick which?
There is no outright winner. Here is our take, profile by profile:
| Your profile | Our suggestion | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are new to AI and do not want to pay | Gemini | Richer free tier (images, voice, storage) |
| You write a lot (reports, letters, articles) | Claude | Strong at writing and long documents |
| You code | Claude | Claude Code included from the Pro plan |
| You use Android, Gmail and Drive | Gemini | Direct access to your Google data |
| Tight budget, happy to pay a little | Gemini AI Plus | Cheapest plan, without the top model |
| You want a top model at a mid-range price | Tie | Claude Pro and Google AI Pro are close |
