Smart home and IoT MCP servers: comparison and full list
The Smart home and IoT category lists 34 open-source MCP servers, checked on GitHub. The best scored on our grid are Ha MCP, Stack chan, and Bagel. 71% received a commit in the last three months.
What Smart home and IoT MCP servers are for
Smart home and IoT MCP servers connect an AI agent to physical devices or the data they produce. They support people who want to inspect an installation, control equipment, or investigate technical logs. Ha MCP provides tools for managing Home Assistant, while Tapo MCP supports discovering and controlling TP-Link Tapo devices. Other integrations cover robots or printers. You might ask: “Identify the available devices in this installation, then propose the commands needed to switch off the selected lights.” What the agent can actually do depends on device support, network configuration, and the permissions granted to the server.
Example uses:
- Inspect devices available through Home Assistant before preparing a command for a specific appliance.
- Control a supported Tapo device after confirming its identity and location within your installation.
- Query IoT or robotics logs to examine events associated with a reported equipment problem.
- Prepare a print job through an integration that supports slicing models and managing the queue.

Official servers
Published by the service's own vendor (per the awesome-mcp-servers list): they usually track the API closely and are better maintained.
Choosing and securing
Check supported device models and functions, including any dependency on a cloud account. Review local network operation, required permissions, and confirmation controls. Documentation should explain failure conditions and what happens when connectivity is lost. Compare maintenance, licensing, and official or community ownership. Test a low-consequence command before expanding access, and verify whether the server reports actual device state or only acknowledges that a request was sent.
Commands can affect lighting, motion, heat, or equipment operating without supervision. Verify the target device and require confirmation for actions with physical consequences. Sensors, cameras, and logs may reveal occupancy or personal routines. Protect credentials and restrict network exposure. Information received from a device must not become authority for unrelated actions. Keep a practical way to stop equipment or regain manual control when needed.
Before connecting a server to an agent with access to your data, run the AI agent security check.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Smart home and IoT MCP server?
On our grid (adoption, maintenance, framework), Ha MCP (82/100), Stack chan (78/100), and Bagel (76/100) come first. The right choice mostly depends on the service you need and the rights you are willing to grant.
Are these servers free?
82% declare an open-source licence and are free to use. 5 need an API key: the connected service may be paid.
Will a local installation work without an Internet connection?
That depends on the server, devices, and AI client. Some communication may stay on your network while authentication or request processing relies on remote services. Review each dependency and test offline behavior before relying on the setup for everyday use or tasks that require predictable availability.
Should I let the agent control every device without confirmation?
Consider the consequences of each command. Actions involving heat, movement, or access to a building warrant explicit review. Define which devices and operations are allowed, along with conditions for stopping automation. Keep an independent way to interrupt the equipment and take over manually if the agent behaves unexpectedly.
