AI for researchers

AI can support research operations when you can inspect the inputs, outputs and validation criteria. It can help transcribe interviews, query a document collection or examine the behaviour of an application using language models. Whisper transcribes audio recordings. LM Studio supports querying documents offline. Opik compares experiment results and evaluates responses against automated criteria. These functions do not validate a hypothesis, establish an interpretation or determine the scientific quality of a protocol. During a research day, you might correct a transcript, query approved documents and check the resulting answers against the source material. If you develop an application, you might also compare its outputs across configurations. Your analysis remains necessary to explain differences, document limitations and decide which conclusions the evidence supports. The workflow is useful when its intermediate steps remain available for inspection and review.

Tasks where AI saves time

  • Transcribe interviews with Whisper to prepare a text corpus that you check before starting analysis.
  • Query documents offline with LM Studio to locate passages for verification against the original sources.
  • Extract web page content with Firecrawl to prepare a corpus according to your research protocol.
  • Trace an agent’s calls with Langfuse to examine the steps leading to a particular response.
  • Compare experiment results with Opik to identify differences between the configurations you are currently testing.
  • Search earlier conversations in LibreChat to retrieve exchanges relevant to your ongoing research and analysis.

Our picks

Job-specific precautions

Respect participant consent, confidentiality commitments and institutional rules before transferring research data. Offline processing also requires control over access, files and the configuration in use. For web collections, check access conditions and reuse rights. Document the models, prompts, versions and corrections needed to interpret your results. Automated evaluation can reproduce biases in its criteria, so inspect problematic cases and retain human review appropriate to the protocol. Keep records that distinguish generated outputs from your analytical decisions, especially where those decisions affect coding, interpretation or the claims you report.

Where to start

Choose an interview you are authorised to process and limit the trial to transcription with Whisper. Define what a usable transcript must preserve for your analysis, then correct the text against the recording. Measure the full time and compare it with your usual method on similar material. Note errors that could affect coding or interpretation. Keep the workflow if savings remain after verification and you can document the corrections needed to make the transcript suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI tools for researchers?

The most useful categories are research assistants, note-taking and knowledge bases, and lLMOps and observability. Top of our grid: Langfuse, Whisper, and LM Studio.

Can you start for free?

Yes: 107 of the 113 selected tools have a free tier, for example Langfuse, Whisper, and LM Studio.

Is using a model offline enough to protect my data?

Offline operation can avoid a transfer while you query documents, but it does not secure the entire setup. Check computer access, backups, logs and configuration. Before processing sensitive material with LM Studio, review how your installation handles files and whether the arrangement meets your institution’s requirements for that data.

Can automated evaluation count as a scientific result?

It can form part of a protocol if you explain what it measures and its limitations. A score depends on criteria, data and sometimes an evaluating model. When using Opik or Langfuse, inspect actual responses and document disagreements with human assessment before interpreting the result as evidence.

How can I make AI-assisted research open to scrutiny?

Retain permitted sources, prompts, model versions and relevant settings. Separate raw outputs from your corrections and explain their role in the analysis. Where data cannot be shared, describe the restrictions and provide the methodological information you can disclose. Readers need to understand how the assistance affected your conclusions.
