AI tools for developers: our selection (258)
For developers, we selected 258 verified AI tools across 39 categories, 238 of them with a free tier. Best scored: LlamaIndex, Langfuse, and Whisper.
AI for developers
AI can help you navigate documentation, structure extracted data and investigate possible explanations for a problem. Its usefulness depends on the context you provide and the checks you perform afterwards. It cannot take responsibility for architecture, security or release decisions. During a working day, you might review an incident report, locate the relevant documentation and compare a suggested explanation with the application’s actual behaviour. LlamaIndex can extract content from complex documents and index documents for search. Langfuse can trace an agent’s calls and steps and evaluate response quality. These capabilities can make information easier to inspect, but they do not establish that an answer is correct. You still need to understand the system, examine dependencies, test unusual inputs and decide whether a proposed change belongs in the codebase. Clear questions and accessible source material make that review easier.
Tasks where AI saves time
- Summarise an incident report to separate observed symptoms, possible causes and checks that still need completing.
- Extract tables from technical documents to prepare structured data for an integration you can validate.
- Locate relevant passages in indexed documentation before changing application behaviour or interpreting a business rule.
- Draft possible test cases for unusual inputs, then check their relevance against the project’s requirements.
- Transcribe a technical meeting so you can review decisions and prepare an accurate written summary.
- Inspect recorded agent steps to identify inconsistent responses and focus your next debugging investigation.

Job-specific precautions
Check project confidentiality rules before sharing source code, logs or internal documents. Remove secrets, credentials and personal information that the task does not require. Review how the selected service stores and uses submitted material. Running a model locally also requires attention to device access, files and backups. Check the licensing of reused material, dependency security and the effects of suggested changes. Review generated code and run relevant tests before accepting it. Keep human approval in the release process, especially when a change affects authentication, permissions or sensitive data.
Where to start
Choose a recurring task, such as finding a business rule in internal documentation. Try document indexing with LlamaIndex using material you are authorised to process. Record the time spent finding an answer and checking its source, then compare it with your usual search process on similar requests. Include document preparation and corrections in your assessment. If answers remain difficult to verify, improve the source material before expanding the experiment. Keep the scope narrow until you can judge whether the workflow helps.

Frequently asked questions
Which AI tools for developers?
The most useful categories are aI coding assistants, developer tools, and model APIs and platforms. Top of our grid: LlamaIndex, Langfuse, and Whisper.
Can you start for free?
Yes: 238 of the 258 selected tools have a free tier, for example LlamaIndex, Langfuse, and Whisper.
Can I merge code suggested by AI directly?
Treat suggested code as a contribution that needs review. Check whether it fits the project, introduces dependencies, raises licensing questions or changes security assumptions. Run appropriate tests and inspect edge cases. A plausible explanation does not establish that the implementation behaves correctly in your environment or meets your requirements.
Can I use a local model with confidential documentation?
A local setup can help keep documents on your computer, depending on its configuration. LM Studio supports querying documents offline. You still need to check device access, backups, logs and organisational rules. Local execution does not remove your responsibility to control which material is available and who can access it.
How can I assess whether an agent is reliable enough?
Use representative requests and define what a satisfactory answer must contain. Review responses, supporting material and recurring failures. Langfuse can trace agent steps and evaluate response quality. Your assessment should also consider the consequences of an incorrect answer and whether a person can check the result before it affects users.
